Fort Jones was founded in 1852 as a military post during the California Gold Rush. It was named after Colonel Roger Jones, who served as Adjutant General of the United States Army from 1825 to 1852. The town increased in population due to its location on the Siskiyou Trail, used by miners traveling to gold fields in Oregon.
